Everything You Need to Know About the NHA CCMA Exam

The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam is a testament to the knowledge and skills needed to excel as a medical assistant. The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) administers this exam for candidates aspiring to make a mark in this field.

The NHA collaborates with health educators and employers to create an exam that paves the way for opportunities in this rewarding yet demanding career, making it the largest allied health certification agency in the U.S. Here are some frequently asked questions about the NHA CCMA exam.

How Many Questions Are On the NHA CCMA Exam?

The exam consists of 150 scored multiple-choice questions. There are also 30 unscored pre-test questions. The exam divides the questions into three distinctive categories:

  • Clinical Competency – 106 questions covering clinical workflow, safety, infection control, procedures and examinations, and pharmacology.
  • General -38 questions covering legal and ethical issues plus communication.
  • Administration – 36 questions focusing on billing, coding and insurance, scheduling appointments, and health information management.

NHA lists the exam as having seven domains which further divides each section. For example, basic pharmacology, nutrition and anatomy, and physiology are under clinical competency.

How Much Is the NHA CCMA Exam?

You must pay to take the initial certification exam and recertification exams. The pricing breakdown is as follows:

Is the NHA CCMA Exam Hard?

This exam tests the depth of your knowledge and skill, so by design, it is challenging. Those who study for the test and attend an effective program should not find it overwhelming. It does cover a lot of ground, though. So how well you prepare will be critical. You shouldn’t expect to pass it without studying.

In 2021, NHA administered 44,588 CCMA exams. The pass rate was 77.08%.

What Is the Highest Score on the NHA CCMA Exam?

The NHA’s CCMA exam is fully computerized, employing a psychometric scoring method known as ‘standard setting’. This approach involves collaboration between researchers, psychometricians, and other experts in the field to devise a scoring scale that determines a pass or fail status.

In this system, the difficulty level of each question dictates its score. For example, a simple question like “What is the average body temperature?” would be assigned a lower score. On the other hand, a complex question that necessitates specific education and training would earn a higher score.

Once you complete the test, the computer system tallies the scores of all correctly answered questions to decide whether you pass or fail. Questions left unanswered contribute zero to the overall score. The pinnacle of achievement on this exam is a perfect score of 500.

What Score Do You Need to Pass the CCMA Exam?

Potential scores range from 200 to 500, with 500 being the highest. You must get a score of at least 390, which is 78%, to pass.
